Welcome to our Zadar City Tour which takes you even further to discover the famous city of Šibenik. Both cities have monuments included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Two Dalmatian cities, Zadar from the Neolithic time and Šibenik founded by Croatians, will both astonish you in their own way.
Zadar is one of the oldest cities on the coast with almost 3000 years of existence on the very same peninsula. This old city is the center of Zadar still today facing a bigger city area which at the moment has almost 90 000 inhabitants. Zadar cultural heritage is enormous and ranges from Liburnian Neolithic tribes to Roman Empire and later Kingdom Croatia time but even beyond that.
The second part of our tour introduces you to the city of Šibenik. This territory shares some parts of the same history and legacy as Zadar, especially during the Venice Republic government in these parts but not always and not in the same way. The difference is even today visible in the tradition, customs and also music. Šibenik is known to be the oldest native Croatian city on the Adriatic. Founded by Croatian people at the estuary of the river Krka already in the 10th century. The same river is today part of the National park Krka.
The estimated duration of the tour is for 1 pick-up/drop-off. We can pick up travelers or meet them at a meeting point.

We meet at 11 AM at the famous installation called Greeting to the Sun. A solar panel placed on the floor in the form of a solar system. Next to it there is another popular installation, Sea Organ. Both installations are the work of the popular Croatian architect Nikola Bašić.
We will discover Zadar starting from the famous installation Greeting to the Sun and Sea Organ all the way to the Venice Republic master piece of defense. Between the two you will see a famous 1st century B.C. Roman Forum and the biggest Romanesque Cathedral in Dalmatia and much more.
The most famous street of Zadar, Kalelarga, won’t leave you indifferent or wondering why Tomislav Ivčić, one of the most famous Croatian singers born and raised in Zadar, sang about this particular street in his song ‘Kalelarga’.
Our walking tour will take you to the People’s Square (Narodni trg) where a lot of people like to meet or drink coffee and listen to street artists that perform in front of a lovely medieval City Hall. Also known as a Loggia (Loža). Both, City Guard and Loggia, are projects of a famous architect Gian Girolamo Sanmicheli from Venice.
The tour in Šibenik starts with the Cathedral of St.James. This building represents a masterpiece of Renaissance style in Croatia. The Cathedral was put on the UNESCO list of world heritage in 2000. The construction took 105 years and several masters worked on it, among which the biggest credit of course goes to Juraj Dalmatinac.
The northern portal of the Cathedral faces a Renaissance city hall and small loggia used for city councils and judicial affairs. Between them you can see one well on what is called today a City Square but in fact a huge water tank.
One big city tank is never enough, that’s why Šibenik has another huge tank right next door to the City Square. The tank of the capacity of 28.800 barrels of water today is used as the popular bar, a favorite gathering place for Šibenik residents.
Šibenik is known for its secular architecture in different styles. The richest heritage usually dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Foscolo is one of the palaces from the 15th century that was donated to the Franciscans in 1648. Beside their Church of St.Lawrence, Franciscans built a small cave dedicated to the Lady of Lourdes in 1926.
Best preserved part of the fortifications in Šibenik are fortresses St.Michael’s, St.Nicholas, Šubićevac and St. John’s. St.Michael’s fortress is how everything started already in 998. with the Castrum San Michaelis. The patron of the city is also St.Michael.
Free time in Šibenik is possible in case there are no delays. The drive back to Zadar usually lasts 1h15min but can last shorter or longer depending on the traffic that day.
Two cities, one peninsula, the other one in the middle of the river mouth. Two urban settlements inhabited continuously for several millennia, rich in the legacy of Roman, early Christian, early Croatian and medieval culture. Heritage included in UNESCO. Juraj Dalmatinac the most respected Renaissance artist, sculptor and builder on this territory worked in both cities. Zadar is an example of the invincible defense strategies ‘Serenissima’ built from 1409 -1797. Šibenik will teleport you to the Renaissance, but also to the imaginary city of Braavos known to everyone from the popular series Game of Thrones.
